Clark City recently issued the following announcement.
The Asian-American Pacific Islanders Community Commission (AAPICC) will hold the first meeting of its new term at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, in Clark County Commission Chambers, 500 Grand Central Parkway, in downtown Las Vegas. At the start of the meeting, members of the commission will be sworn in by North Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge Chris Lee and welcomed by Clark County Commissioners Tick Segerblom and Justin Jones.
The County Commission re-established the AAPICC in 2019 to identify social and economic needs of the growing Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities in the Las Vegas Valley. The committee’s first-term accomplishments included researching the needs of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community, hosting a resource conference, conducting a feasibility study to develop a cultural center, and supporting a County Commission resolution to condemn and combat racism, xenophobia and intolerance against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. In June, the County Commission voted to make the AAPICC permanent. New duties include advising the County Commission and Manager’s Office on matters and concerns of the Asian-American Pacific Islander Community, educating the community on anti-Asian intolerance and promoting equality, encouraging youth education, and convening community forums on public safety, human rights, economic development, social services and multi-cultural development.
“The Asian-American Pacific Islander community is the fastest-growing, multi-cultural population in Clark County, and it’s important for us to understand its needs and concerns,” said Commissioner Segerblom. “We appreciate the work the committee accomplished in its first term and look forward to its continued contributions.”
“The Asian-Pacific Islander community is large and diverse, and its influence is evolving as the Las Vegas Valley grows and changes,” said Commissioner Jones. “The permanent establishment of the AAPICC is an important step to ensure Clark County is responsive to the needs of everyone we serve.”
At the start of Thursday’s meeting, the Las Vegas Kaminari Taiko Drums will perform. AAPICC members also will review their duties, discuss bylaws and the schedule for upcoming meeting dates.
