A University of Nevada, Las Vegas sophomore student's work in the school’s Community Garden has led her to become coordinator of the project.

According to a news release shared by the university, Andie Davis has zeal for plants dating back to high school and she began interning at the campus garden in 2019 before becoming coordinator.

When Davis saw that the garden could use some upkeep, she reached out to Consolidated Students of UNLV (CSUN) President Caren Royce Yap and Vice President Abe Lugo.

“My first project with Caren and Abe was planting 15 unreserved garden beds for the UNLV Food Pantry, back in October 2021,” Davis said in the release. “We were able to donate so much food to the food pantry that we had enough left over to donate to other organizations like Solidarity Fridge, making more of an impact in the community.”

Davis knew that the garden was a great opportunity to bring the school together and when in-person classes started again 2021 she set out to make it happen.

According to former CSUN president Caren Yap: “Andie has collaborated with CSUN and student organizations to generate volunteer opportunities, engaging events and products for the food pantry. She has put all her heart and effort into bringing the garden back to life and there was no one more deserving of such an honor!”

Students and faculty across the UNLV school system are allowed to oversee any one of the 41 garden beds.

According to Andy Davis, part of the UNLV Community Garden: “The previous Earth Day events on campus were nice, but I wanted to bring in something more impactful and had more implications to celebrate year-round than just one day.”
