Drew Johnson, a candidate for Nevada State Senate District 20, said that young girls who advocated for female sports played a crucial role in Nevada's decision to prohibit males from participating in girls' high school sports. This statement was posted on X on April 15.

"Glad to see the young women who bravely stood up to protect female sports in Nevada get the recognition they deserve," said Johnson. "Because of them, males can no longer compete in girls' high school sports in NV! These girls are as young as 11, but they're smarter than most of NV's politicians."

In April 2025, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) announced a new policy requiring student-athletes to compete based on the sex listed on their birth certificate. This policy replaces the previous one that allowed athletes to participate according to their gender identity. The change affects all public high schools involved in NIAA-sanctioned sports.

According to ESPN, as of March 2024, 24 U.S. states have enacted laws restricting transgender athletes from competing on sports teams that align with their gender identity. These laws primarily impact K-12 and collegiate sports programs and generally mandate participation based on the sex listed on birth certificates.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey Data Summary & Trends Report indicates that 22% of high school students in 2021 identified as LGBTQ+. These students reported higher rates of poor mental health, including persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, along with increased levels of bullying, violence, and suicide risk compared to non-LGBTQ+ peers.

Johnson is described on his campaign website as a conservative policy analyst and media personality running for Nevada State Senate in District 20. He has previously worked at think tanks such as the National Center for Public Policy Research and the Taxpayers Protection Alliance. Johnson is recognized for his positions on government accountability and cultural issues.
