When considering the likelihood of earthquakes, California often comes to mind rather than Nevada. However, Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the continental United States, following only California and Alaska. Both Nevada and Las Vegas are situated on a network of fault lines where earthquakes frequently occur. While most tremors are too minor to be felt, the possibility of a significant seismic event remains.

Preparedness is essential for residents of Las Vegas. An emergency kit containing necessities such as medications, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and ten days' worth of food and water should be assembled. Given that Las Vegas relies on air and highway routes for supplies, any disruption could leave the city with limited resources.

Families should develop a disaster plan that includes communication strategies and meeting points. Free community emergency response training (CERT Training) is available to help residents respond effectively to emergencies by teaching basic first aid, search and rescue operations, fire suppression techniques, and more.

Residents can also subscribe to the city of Las Vegas’ emergency alerts at https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-US/BF1085069456 for immediate notifications in case of disasters.

During an earthquake, individuals should "drop, cover and hold on" by getting under sturdy furniture like desks or tables while protecting their heads and necks until the shaking stops. If outside, they should move away from potential hazards such as buildings or power lines before taking cover. Drivers should pull over safely away from traffic.

Contrary to popular belief, doorways are not necessarily safer; staying under sturdy furniture is advisable. Additionally, running outside during an earthquake can expose individuals to falling debris or power lines.

Recording videos for social media during an earthquake is discouraged; prioritizing safety over updates is crucial.

By preparing adequately with kits and plans while understanding associated risks, residents can enhance their safety during seismic events in Las Vegas.
