The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is hoping that a new science degree program will add to the school’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates.

Interested students can enroll in the university’s new Bachelor of Science in General Science program if they have enough college hours, but do not have specific criteria for the university's other science degrees, according to a news release.

“A program like this can allow them to turn the courses they have already completed into a degree and give them a leg up in their career search,” Andy Andres, executive associate dean for the College of Sciences, said in the release.

In addition, the university reports that students who have left the university before finishing their degree may finish a degree program without finishing science-based credit classes.

“This option will allow another path forward toward completing a program that is less dependent on sequenced classes, without compromising the rigor of a science degree,” Andres said.

The program is intended to be a second chance for students who have left the school, along with transfer students, student-athletes and educators, as they are given more flexibility to familiarize themselves with science concepts as they adhere to the program’s requirements.

UNLV data suggests that the program will boost student graduation in the science field by 50 students yearly.
