Nevadans who are interested in growing and harvesting sorghum will have the chance to learn how to do so thanks to a free virtual workshop through the University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Alternative Crop Program.
According to a press release, researchers with the University's College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources have been studying sorghum as an alternative crop for things like hay, animal food and grain for malting and brewing.
"Producers in Nevada are looking for opportunities to grow crops that require less water, and sorghum is such a crop," Maninder Walia, assistant professor and field crop specialist with the College's Extension unit, said in the release. "We have been researching various aspects of sorghum production here at the University, and are happy to share the information with growers and others who may be interested."
The online series that focuses on growing sorghum began on March 22 and will take place each Tuesday through April 12 from 1-2 p.m., according to a press release.
The release noted scientists would brief attendees of the workshops of what their studies have revealed thus far.
Because of drought conditions in Nevada, farmers have been looking to grow crops that don't require as much water to thrive, the release stated.
