Clark City recently issued the following announcement.
Clark County and community partners that support the Harbor Juvenile Assessment Center and Truancy Prevention Outreach (TPOP) programs are hosting a free resource festival for families on Saturday, Oct. 9. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Harbor Flamingo, 2000 E. Flamingo Road, east of Spencer Street in the Greystone Building Complex. Event flyers are available in English and Spanish.
Clark County’s Department of Juvenile Justice Services and multiple community partners that support the Harbor and TPOP programs are hosting the event. Attendees will be able learn about a variety of services available to help youth and their families including tutoring and youth diversion programs, recreational resources, autism support, and health care, food, housing and daycare assistance for parents. An on-site food pantry and closet containing new and gently used clothing also will be available to support families and children in need. Free food, activities and raffles with prizes also are part of the event. In conjunction with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Project REAL and SAFE House, two nonprofit agencies that work with Juvenile Justice Services, will be giving away free guides for high school students to prepare them for safe relationships as adults. More than 40 percent of youth served by the Harbor in 2020 were referred to the program because of domestic violence-related events, a trend that increased during the pandemic.
“A lot of kids who may be chronically absent from school or getting into trouble in the community need resources and support, and so do their families,” said Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, whose Commission district includes the Flamingo Harbor location.
“The Harbor and TPOP programs have been on the front lines of serving children and families throughout the pandemic,” said Clark County Commission Chairman Marilyn Kirkpatrick. “We encourage parents to learn more about the resources available to help them and their kids and grandkids.”
The Harbor now has five locations in the Las Vegas Valley operating seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The program was created to prevent youth from entering the juvenile justice system by helping families cope with problem behavior before issues potentially escalate into more serious trouble. Signs that a child or youth may need help include depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol use, isolation, bullying or changes in behavior. Since opening in October 2016, the Harbor has served more than 18,000 local youth and their families. Counseling, mentoring, anger management and other life skills classes are the top areas of service referrals. The Truancy Prevention Outreach Program (TPOP) evolved from the Harbor’s ongoing collaboration with families and community partners, including the Clark County School District, and is designed to address underlying causes of truancy and chronic absenteeism, which are recognized as significant obstacles to student achievement and success in life.
