Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman admitted to contracting COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated.
KTNV reported that Goodman made the admission at the Las Vegas City Council’s Aug. 4 meeting.
Goodman, who received two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, quarantined for 10 days with only mild symptoms.
“I have no idea (how I got the vaccine) because I am out there all the time, probably inappropriately hugging and touching people all the time, and that’s how I choose to operate and that is how I will continue to choose to operate,” the mayor said in a KTNV video. “I get to choose how I am.”
The mayor did not wear a mask during the meeting despite statewide indoor mask mandate, the station reported.
While Goodman had been a vocal opponent of COVID-19 restrictions since the beginning of the pandemic last year, she urged the public to get vaccinated.
“So glad @mayoroflasvegas is recovered after testing positive for #COVID19,” Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak Tweeted on Aug. 4. “I join the Mayor in encouraging all those eligible to get vaccinated. Breakthrough cases are rare & vaccines are incredibly effective at preventing severe illness.”
KLAS reported that the Nevada Hospital Association attributed overcrowding and staffing shortages in state hospitals to unvaccinated COVID-19 patients.
