The Multicultural Bookstore, located at 2027 Revere St. on the Historic Westside, is marking its one-year anniversary this November. Co-founded by Tamara Shiloh and Carol Santiago, the bookstore has become a valuable resource for local authors to connect with the community.

The store regularly hosts an event called The Authors Social Fun Affair, where local authors can share their work and gain insights into becoming successful. "It is a gathering where authors can learn things they may not have thought of – what they need to be successful," Shiloh stated.

Among the featured authors is Sabrina Hughes, founder and lead author of Sabrebre Baby’s Brown Book Publishing Company. Her books focus on black and brown communities within the children’s book genre. "Hearing our voices and being seen is so important," Hughes emphasized.

Shiloh herself is a children's book author known for her historical fiction chapter book series, “Just Imagine…What If There Were No Black People In The World.” The series highlights contributions from African American inventors, scientists, and other notable figures in history.

Carol Santiago, co-founder of the bookstore and an educator with over 30 years of experience in curriculum development and literacy efforts, aims to integrate local authors into schools. "The goal is to identify (local authors) and bring them into the schools," Santiago explained. "(The kids) may see someone walking down the street and say, ‘Oh…I know that author’."

Hughes acknowledges the support she has received from the bookstore. "I’ve had the pleasure to sell out in the bookstore, showing there is a need for our voices and representation, and it brings me joy that my mission is fruitful," she said.
