A former University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) female track-and-field female athlete never had aspirations of even attending college, and she has now been inducted into the Rebel Hall of Fame.
According to UNLV News Center, Amanda Bingson, a Las Vegas native and Silverado High School graduate, arrived at the school at the urging of her mother, Sue.
“After high school, I just wanted to be done and go work, but my mom told me I wasn’t allowed to,” Bingson told UNLV News Center. “After a strongly worded conversation, I decided to walk on at UNLV. Mothers really do know best, because it turned into the best decision I ever made.”
Once on campus, coaches urged Bingson to participate in the hammer throw -- and it paid off in spades, as she won the Mountain West championship three consecutive seasons.
“I thank everyone who had a hand in this: my family, my coaches and this university," Bingson told UNLV News Center. "After being raised in Las Vegas and representing the school and the city around the world, getting into the hall of fame is the cherry on top for my career.”
UNLV reported that she won the Most Outstanding Entertainer three times in her career, becoming the first athlete in conference history to do so.
Bingson is now retired from hammer throwing and is working as a paramedic in Texas. She recently returned to the UNLV campus to accept her award, along with 11 other athletes joining the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
