The city of Las Vegas announced that a new redistricting ordinance plan and map will be introduced to the public at the Nov. 17 city council meeting. This is part of a process where the city uses census information to configure ward boundaries, and the city’s charter requires wards to be within 5% of each other’s population, a release on the city's website said.
The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada is dedicated to a “fair and just Nevada that puts people and planet first,” it said on Twitter. The group was created by Nevada activists in 1994. The organization tweeted on Oct. 22 that it feels the public should be as involved as possible in the redistricting effort.
“Nevada is now the 3rd-most diverse state in the nation, and #ClarkCounty helped lead the growth in diversity,” PLAN tweeted. “It’s imperative the community inputs what the #redistricting maps and process should look like!”
A public viewing of the redistricting map was held in the City Hall Council Chambers at 495 S. Maine St. on Thursday, Oct. 28. This was a chance to view the maps and the existing ward boundaries compared to what is proposed in the new redistricting plan. There was no public commenting period at the meeting.
The ordinance and map will be scheduled for final adoption on Dec. 1.
