The city of Las Vegas is hosting two family-friendly events to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, on November 2. These events will take place at Lorenzi Park and Pop Squires Park, offering free admission to the public.
At Lorenzi Park's Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza, festivities will run from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event features live entertainment, artisan vendors, food stalls, children's activities, face painting, and an exhibition of altars made by community organizations. "This vibrant homage to life is a true community event," says the city of Las Vegas in its announcement. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and low-back chairs for lawn seating.
Meanwhile, Ward 6 has partnered with small businesses from the Village of Centennial Springs for a Dia de Los Muertos Family Fiesta at Pop Squires Park from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This event includes local market vendors and a special outdoor screening of the animated film “Coco.” Refreshments will be available for purchase.
Sugar skulls play a significant role in Dia de los Muertos celebrations in Mexico and increasingly in the United States as well. The holiday spans November 1-2 and honors deceased loved ones through decorated altars called "ofrendas."
For those interested in participating as vendors at these events, applications can be submitted online.
