To celebrate Black History Month, the city of Las Vegas is launching special events throughout the month including a poetry contest along with several other events.
The city of North Vegas is holding a poetry contest featuring the theme, "What does Black History mean to you?" News 3 Las Vegas reported. Local residents can submit their poems in video format to as videos BlackHistoryCNLV@cityofnorthlasvegas.com.
"February is #BlackHistoryMonth," Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak wrote in a Feb. 1 Twitter post. "This month and every month, it’s important we recognize, honor and celebrate the contributions and achievements of those who went before us, and the history makers blazing trails today."
Videos should be 90 seconds or less. Prizes include a $50 gift card for first place, a $25 gift card for second place and third place will receive a $15 gift card.
Guests can also visit The Neon Museum to learn how local black leaders have contributed to the history of Las Vegas. The museum will feature a mural commemorating how local icons have influenced Las Vegas' cultural history.
For the whole month of February, the iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign will be lit by red, black and green lights in honor of Black History Month.
