Lights on the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign Go ‘Air Force Blue’
The lights on the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign turned “Air Force blue” in recognition of the 75th birthday of the United State Air Force and Aviation Nation 2022, which will be held Nov. 5 and 6.
Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, whose district includes the base, was joined by Col. Jason Wild, 99 Air Base Wing Vice Commander, in turning the lights blue in a ceremony at the sign on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip.
“Nellis Air Force Base and the men and women who work there are an integral part of this community and I’m proud to join them in celebrating the Air Force’s 75th birthday,” said Kirkpatrick. “I invite everyone to visit Nellis this weekend for the base’s first air show in three years, Aviation Nation 2022, and watch the Thunderbirds perform and see all that this exciting event has to offer.”
“We’re excited to welcome the community onto the base for this weekend’s air show,” Wild said. “Aviation Nation is a great way to showcase what we’ve been working on over the last couple of years, and ultimately, it’s a way to give back to the community for the tremendous support, and this show of solidarity.”
Nellis AFB, the “Home of the Fighter Pilot,” is hosting Aviation Nation 2022 as the capstone event concluding the Air Force’s 75th anniversary celebration. For 75 years, American Air Force personnel have excelled as they’ve executed the Air Force’s mission to fly, fight and win – delivering airpower anytime, anywhere in defense of our nation. The United States Air Force was founded on Sept. 18, 1947, though it got its start before then as part of the United States Army Signal Corps in 1907.
Aviation Nation 2022 will include static displays, exhibits and aerial performances featuring the Thunderbirds, F-25 Lightning II Demonstration Team, and many more aircraft. More than 100,000 spectators are expected to attend this free event open to the public, making Aviation Nation a key outreach opportunity to engage and establish positive connections between the military and the local community. Additionally, fifth-generation aircraft performances are sure to excite spectators and put on display the U.S. Air Force’s superior capabilities and Nellis Air Force Base’s warfighter training mission.
