The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced on April 13 that a fatal traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in a wheelchair occurred late the previous night, resulting in the city’s 39th traffic-related death of 2026.

According to the department, the incident took place at approximately 11:11 p.m. on April 12 on Fremont Street south of East Oakey Boulevard. Authorities said evidence and witness statements indicated that a male pedestrian, age 43, was crossing northbound travel lanes outside of any marked or unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a northbound 2013 KIA Optima driven by Johnny Jr. Richardson, age 50.

Police reported that after being hit by the left front of the vehicle, both the pedestrian and his wheelchair were projected into the dirt center median. Medical personnel arriving at the scene determined that the pedestrian was beyond medical intervention and pronounced him deceased at the location.

The driver stopped immediately following the collision and called emergency services. The department said Richardson displayed signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). No injuries were reported for Richardson.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Collision Investigation Section is continuing to investigate this incident.
