In 2024, Las Vegas Medicaid providers billed $35,091,123 for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment services, as reported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This amount marked a 7.8% rise over 2023, when $32,559,609 in claims were made for the same service category.

Medicaid, a state-operated public health insurance program funded by both federal and state governments, provides coverage to low-income groups, including families, seniors, children and people with disabilities. It is one of the largest components of the U.S. health care system.

Because taxpayer funds support Medicaid, fluctuations in local billing amounts illustrate how health care dollars are distributed within communities.

The “Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment” category encompasses a set of Medicaid-billed services grouped by care type, based on standard HCPCS and CPT code definitions. For this review, each billing code was assigned to just one service category by using stable code prefixes and ranges, allowing related services to be examined together, while ensuring rankings remain accurate and no services were repeatedly counted.

Although Medicaid spending grew across many service categories, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment placed fifth for total Medicaid payments in Las Vegas in 2024.

Statewide, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment ranked sixth among service categories by Medicaid payments in Nevada in 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, Medicaid payments connected to Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment in Las Vegas grew by $389,133, or 1.1%. Increases in spending were especially notable in 2020 and 2021.

Spending on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment services was spread across Las Vegas, but a few ZIP codes saw the largest share. In 2024, 89102 reported $5,003,278, 89130 had $4,800,497 and 89106 tallied $4,605,352 in Medicaid payments for this category. These 3 ZIP codes together made up 41.1% of Medicaid payments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment in Las Vegas for the year.

Medicaid payments in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment category were also highly concentrated among only a handful of service billing codes.

Comparatively, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Medicaid payments increased 7.8% from 2023 to 2024 in Las Vegas, while payments for all City Medicaid claim categories rose only 0.7% during that period.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, total federal and state Medicaid spending hit approximately $871.7 billion in the 2023 fiscal year, representing around 18% of U.S. health spending—a sharp increase from $613.5 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This jump equals about 40% growth over several years, with enrollment expansion and higher utilization during and after the COVID-19 pandemic as key drivers.

Recent federal budget laws enacted under the Trump administration include substantial plans to cut federal Medicaid funding and change the program’s structure. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed into law in 2025, is forecast to reduce federal Medicaid spending by over $1 trillion over the next decade. It introduces work requirements and higher cost-sharing, potentially lowering coverage and payments for some recipients, shifting more financial responsibility to states while limiting growth of federal Medicaid contributions. The program, however, continues to support tens of millions of Americans.
