Dina Titus, U.S. Congresswoman representing Nevada’s 1st district since 2013, used her social media platform over the weekend to highlight recent community events in Las Vegas and promote messages of inclusivity and cultural appreciation.
On October 11, Titus addressed the cancellation of a local event, stating, “While yesterday’s Pride parade in Las Vegas was unfortunately canceled due to weather, the equality movement remains strong. In honor of National Coming Out Day, celebrate with your community members, engage in meaningful conversation, and be proud of who you are and who you”. The post was made in recognition of National Coming Out Day.
Later that day, on October 12, Titus participated in a cultural celebration and shared: “Today I joined Honorary Consul for Japan Kathleen Blakely at the 16th Annual Aki Matsuri Festival. As evidenced by today’s celebrations, Japanese heritage and culture enrich our community #OnlyinDistrictOne and across the country. @JAPANinSF @cityofhenderson”.
In another post from October 12 regarding a separate festival, she wrote: “Events like today’s Asian Lantern Festival offer a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from honoring culture, history, and community. Whether it is the food, the music, or performances, we celebrate the deep roots that Asian Americans have built here in Nevada. @ACDCNV”.
Titus has been active in public service for decades. Before her tenure in Congress began in 2013—succeeding Shelley Berkley—she served as a member of the Nevada Senate from 1988 to 2008. Born in Thomasville, Georgia in 1950 and currently residing in Las Vegas at age 72, Titus graduated from the College of William & Mary with a BA in 1970.
