The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded nearly $15 million in grants to the Southern Nevada Homelessness Continuum of Care. The money will be dispersed over the next three years to address homelessness throughout Southern Nevada. The Southern Nevada Homelessness Continuum of Care is comprised of local governments and other agencies, religious organizations, advocacy groups and others concerned with the issues of homelessness and affordable housing through a coordinated and regional approach to planning service provision. “With its wide-reaching effects, these funds are a major source of critical aid for those seeking assistance with homelessness and housing services,” said Clark County Commission Chairman Jim Gibson. “Federal grant funding makes it possible to provide crucial support for individuals in need.” This funding comprises a first-of-its-kind package of resources to help communities provide housing and supportive services to people in unsheltered settings. Nearly $315 million in grants were awarded to 46 communities to address unsheltered and rural homelessness.
“No person regardless of circumstances should have to live life on the streets,” said Tim Burch Administrator of Human Services. “It cannot be overemphasized what an impact these funds can have when communities come together with both short-term solutions, but also long-term goal-oriented objectives and programs.”
The resources announced will fund programs that include rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, case management, and supportive services.
The 2022 Homeless Census found 5,645 people living in shelters or on the streets and estimated that nearly 14,000 people experienced homelessness in Southern Nevada at some point during the year.
